Troopers observed a white 2002 BMW northbound on Route 9 in the town of Poughkeepsie traveling in excess of the posted speed limit on Friday, Aug. 31, state police said.
Troopers observed the operator lose control of his vehicle, and strike several parked cars before crashing into a house on East Cedar Street, according to state police.
The driver of the BMW, identified as 26-year-old Benjamin Cruz of Poughkeepsie, was found to be under the influence of drugs and or alcohol without a required interlock device, and was subsequently arrested, police said. An investigation also found approximately 12.5 grams of marijuana in the vehicle.
Cruz was charged with driving while intoxicated (an unclassified misdemeanor), operating a motor vehicle without an ignition interlock device (a Class A misdemeanor), unlawful possession of marijuana (a violation), and multiple vehicle and traffic law violations.
Cruz was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital for minor injuries and issued the appropriate uniform traffic tickets and an appearance ticket returnable to the town of Poughkeepsie Court on Sept. 17.
